Bartonella is a genus of gram-negative bacteria. Bartonella spp. are transmitted by several arthropod / blood sucking vectors, including fleas, ticks and, potentially, mites and spiders.

The bacterium causes the disease known as a cat scratch disease and a repeated fever of unknown origin, it rarely causes endocarditis.

The DNA of Bartonella is detected in the sample using molecular methods. Additionally, in this test is possible to distinguish two species of the bacterial pathogen, Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana.
